I get the sense that people that don't enjoy this book also had a hard time enjoying the Hobbit, yes this book wanders and does not have much plot but it has lovely scenes and heart。 After living through 2020 I want nothing more then curl up in Badgers home in front of the warm redbrick fireplace。 I want to sail down a lovely river and picnic with tiny honey pots and jams with the sunlight filtering through the willow leaves。 I want to take winter time adventures to unknown place and wander thro I get the sense that people that don't enjoy this book also had a hard time enjoying the Hobbit, yes this book wanders and does not have much plot but it has lovely scenes and heart。 After living through 2020 I want nothing more then curl up in Badgers home in front of the warm redbrick fireplace。 I want to sail down a lovely river and picnic with tiny honey pots and jams with the sunlight filtering through the willow leaves。 I want to take winter time adventures to unknown place and wander throught the snow。 This is not a book too devour but a journey to enjoy。 My sales pitch is, "I encourage you to read this book expecting to make friends and travel a vacation when you can't leave your home。 Live out your cottage core dreams with out breaking the bank!" Over all I loved this book and my biggest regret is waiting this long to read it。 。。。more

Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows is a canonical text。 It is part of the DNA of the Anglophone world。 As a child I was in a lot of marinas and yacht showrooms because that is what my father did for a living: sold boats。 I have certainly lost track of the number of times I saw E。H。 Shephard's illustration of the Rat and the Mole in a dinghy with the caption "There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats。 Simply messing。"Every classic rock fa Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows is a canonical text。 It is part of the DNA of the Anglophone world。 As a child I was in a lot of marinas and yacht showrooms because that is what my father did for a living: sold boats。 I have certainly lost track of the number of times I saw E。H。 Shephard's illustration of the Rat and the Mole in a dinghy with the caption "There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats。 Simply messing。"Every classic rock fan worth their salt knows that the first Pink Floyd album is called The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which is one of the spookiest chapters in this book and defines nicely the difference between Syd Barrett-era mysticism and the Roger Waters-era paranoia。 Grahame turns a mundane search for a baby otter into an encounter with the incarnation of pagan nature that leaves Rat and Mole a bit shaken, but in a good way。Finally, there is the personality of the Toad, who is the most narcissistic character you've ever met, alternating constantly between being charmingly dotty and brutally selfish。 He cares for nothing but his own pleasure and descends temporarily into fits of madness in its pursuit。 The Toad is apparently the personification of the landed gentry of rural England, who in Grahame's time were getting to the bottom of their treasure chests。 Grahame offers a hypothesis as to why。If the Toad represents the titled aristocracy, the Badger stands in for the much more sensible yeoman farmer, who while freeborn and landowning, has no airs to peerage and makes his own living via an actual relationship with the land。 While he is gruff and retiring, the Badger proves to be a good friend to all who need his help。The world of The River and the Wild Wood seems isolated from the human world at first。 Early on the Mole talks of visiting this Wide World beyond the horizon and the Rat warns him against it。 When Mole fecklessly wanders into the Wild Wood, he at first seems to have gone beyond the bounds of civilization, but this is soon shown to be due to his parochialism more than the actual dangers of the place。Humans enter the tale through the escapades of the Toad and this is when Grahame's imagination veers over into the surreal。 His animals, which talk, think, wear clothes, and have possessions, have still been physically animals until we focus on the Toad。 Suddenly the Toad is doing things like "running his fingers through his hair" and his teeth chatter in the cold。 Furthermore, the humans in this book think nothing of their encounters with these talking animals, other than being a bit annoyed by the ruses deployed by the Toad。 It is only he, in the end, who ever directly encounters people。The Wind in the Willows is thought of as a children's book and so it ultimately is, but there is a weirdness and a beauty to Grahame's mind and voice that is appealing to adults too。 The piper at the gates of dawn may actually frighten some children, but it will make adults remember what it was like to encounter the sublime as a child。The book also meets an essential criterion of a novel: the main character undergoes a transformation as a result of the experiences that you witness in the course of the story。 The Mole we meet in the opening chapter is a far more naive and blinkered creature than the one we leave at the close of story。 Under the tutelage of the Rat and the Badger, he becomes much more worldly and brave。 Those two characters, however, change very little, and the reader is left very doubtful as to whether the Toad has actually learned a blessed thing in spite of his self-wrought trials and tribulations。 。。。more

I really did enjoy The Wind in the Willows 。 I found my favorite character to be an empowering heroine, despite her circumstances。

I read this book to my 6 year old and it was an effort reading and explaining the words。The story was sweet, but writing had more complicated words for a 6 year old。

This book brought back a lot of memories for me。 I remember watching an animated tv version of this when I was young and loving it。 I couldn't remember the last time I had read this book, so I decided I would give it a reread。 I am glad I did。 It is cute story with some lessons hidden within。 I would definitely recommend this book to young readers。 This book brought back a lot of memories for me。 I remember watching an animated tv version of this when I was young and loving it。 I couldn't remember the last time I had read this book, so I decided I would give it a reread。 I am glad I did。 It is cute story with some lessons hidden within。 I would definitely recommend this book to young readers。 。。。more

Cute and inspiring; talking animals who subjugate other animals to labor is a bit contradictory; did not like the toad

I feel like some chapters were entirely pointless and the pacing threw me off。 Toad had a decent plot line however and the descriptions of the buildings and environment were extremely visual。

Tara Charlton

Charming, but it did become a bit boring。😅

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for the first time in at least twenty years。 The descriptions of simple love of nature are so beautiful and the emotions expressed between good friends are amazing。 There is so much to be learnt from this story and I feel like I will definitely be revisiting it again。

A classic from 1908, part of my occasional attempt to acquaint myself with classic children's stories that I've never read。This is a story of England, of life in the English countryside。 We have Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad, having adventures and experiences in the idyllic countryside。 But for the most part, not much happens。 One reads this for the descriptions of rural England, of a time gone past, of a simpler life。I honestly cannot see today's kids being interested in this book, or if th A classic from 1908, part of my occasional attempt to acquaint myself with classic children's stories that I've never read。This is a story of England, of life in the English countryside。 We have Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad, having adventures and experiences in the idyllic countryside。 But for the most part, not much happens。 One reads this for the descriptions of rural England, of a time gone past, of a simpler life。I honestly cannot see today's kids being interested in this book, or if they are rather young I cannot see them understanding the language of this book。 But for an adult, it was a nice picture of the past, of the countryside。 。。。more

با اینکه داستان ساده و کودکانه‌ای داشت، اما لذت بردم از خوندنش。

Sweet and slow, with a tender look at the power of friendship。 We all couldn't wait to see what trouble Mr。 Toad would get himself into next。 Sweet and slow, with a tender look at the power of friendship。 We all couldn't wait to see what trouble Mr。 Toad would get himself into next。 。。。more

We enjoyed this, as we enjoy most stories, but didn’t love it。 The development of the four animal characters and their natures was fantastic and the ending was a great surprise。

Whimsical and heartwarming friendships combined with lovely language had me feeling all the feels while we read this book as a family。 Not heavy on plot or action, but if you can slow down to the pace of the book and savor it, then I highly recommend。

The toad adventures in this book are fun and the writing is good。 I even liked the characters as a whole, but these characters are not animal personifications and kidlike。 They are very much adult and social configurations。 And how slow parts of this story moved。 I don't know how it could keep a child's interest, maybe it's children of a different generation or being read daily chapter by chapter--that's what I ended up doing。 Plus, I'm not really into the British style of so much character deve The toad adventures in this book are fun and the writing is good。 I even liked the characters as a whole, but these characters are not animal personifications and kidlike。 They are very much adult and social configurations。 And how slow parts of this story moved。 I don't know how it could keep a child's interest, maybe it's children of a different generation or being read daily chapter by chapter--that's what I ended up doing。 Plus, I'm not really into the British style of so much character development and much less plot。 Mostly, I did not like the intermingled other random storylines between Toad's adventures。 These were just distracting and slow moving。 。。。more

Charming and palate-cleansing。I know there are many who take the children’s classics and re-evaluate them against prevailing contemporary cultural mindsets, often finding them sorely lacking, or showcasing values to which the majority of civilized society no longer adhere。 In this case, we find our four main anthropomorphic characters living the genteel English country life of the Edwardians。 Those characters reflect the world of the time, and while I think it is indeed important to not perpetua Charming and palate-cleansing。I know there are many who take the children’s classics and re-evaluate them against prevailing contemporary cultural mindsets, often finding them sorely lacking, or showcasing values to which the majority of civilized society no longer adhere。 In this case, we find our four main anthropomorphic characters living the genteel English country life of the Edwardians。 Those characters reflect the world of the time, and while I think it is indeed important to not perpetuate the injustices and inequalities portrayed, nor to romanticize them, I think both children and adults have the ability to look past those flaws and find something of value within those potentially offending pages。 Friendship, loyalty, and the pleasant aesthetics of a warm, snug burrow on a cold winter’s night make this tale one worth reading despite its ode to the aristocracy。 I believe that sometimes the nostalgia we feel isn’t necessarily for the time or the circumstances of what we have read, but rather it is a nostalgia for how it makes us as readers feel。 It harkens us back to a day when we were willing to believe that a mole and a rat spent a summer day punting on the river, or that a toad stole a motorcar, or that field mice came caroling and stayed for dinner。 。。。more

(1。5/5)The writing and creativity of Grahame is good… now is it my cup of tea??? Absolutely not。This book was boring as shit。 And I thought to myself, maybe this is because I’m an adult and this is a children’s book (kinda), so I asked myself “would five year old me like this?” The answer was also absolutely not。I mean it was 210 pages with pictures and look how long it took me to get through。 I ended up reading 80% of this book via audiobook at 2。5x speed…I wouldn’t even read this to my kids。 B (1。5/5)The writing and creativity of Grahame is good… now is it my cup of tea??? Totally charming and I highly recommend this version narrated by Ralph Cosham。 It's described as audio CD, but my library had it for streaming from Overdrive on Libby app。 I had not read this book as a child, a category for my 2021 book challenge。 As a first read, it would be worthwhile for me to reread it in a text version to savor the thoughts and language。 Totally charming and I highly recommend this version narrated by Ralph Cosham。 It's described as audio CD, but my library had it for streaming from Overdrive on Libby app。 I had not read this book as a child, a category for my 2021 book challenge。 As a first read, it would be worthwhile for me to reread it in a text version to savor the thoughts and language。 。。。more
